SOMETHING TO HOLD

Written Monday, November, 30 2020 at 2:30 AM

I wanted to make a cap.
A Dominican cap.
Not one that yells. Not one that begs to be seen.
Something quiet. Something beautiful. Something that means something.

Most things you find now are cheap or loud.
They scream color. They shout flag. They forget care.

I wanted the opposite.
Something that could live beyond trend or noise.
Timeless.
Elegant without trying.
Proud without a slogan.

The mark is “RD.”
Simple lines. No tricks.
Inside the “R,” I hid the island itself.
A small outline, for those who look close.
Not everyone will see it. That’s the point.

On the side and back-
the Bayahíbe rose.
It only grows in Dominican Republic. It’s rare, almost gone.
A quiet sign.

It had to feel right.
Wool, dense and soft.
A crown with shape but not stiffness.
A brim that bends just enough.
Every line had to earn its place.

Naming it 1106-
November 6, 1844.
The day the flag and the name were made official.
Four numbers you don’t need to explain to those who know.

Each cap comes in a dust bag.
Not packaging. Protection.
It’s made to be worn, yes.
But also to be kept.

It’s not loud. It doesn’t need to be.
It’s for the ones who understand weight.
Who care how something feels when you hold it.
A cap, yes-
but also a small piece of memory you can keep in your hands.
